How Different Medications Affect Dental Care

Blog | Comments Off on How Different Medications Affect Dental Care

Different heart conditions such as a heart attack, high blood pressure, chest pain, stroke and heart failure will require you to take different medications in order to treat them. After a heart attack you will start taking blood thinning medications. Blood thinners lessen the possibility of blood clots but during an oral surgery they can cause excessive bleeding and can be very hard to close up. Make sure to tell your dentist if you are taking any blood thinners prior to any dental surgery and make sure to brush with a soft tooth brush and floss gently. Certain medications people take for high blood pressure can leave your mouth dry and can disrupt your taste buds making foods taste different. A dry mouth can making swallowing food a lot harder and can be painful when eating certain foods such as anything spicy. In order to improve saliva production your dentist may recommend artificial saliva to help you digest food in your mouth. Calcium channel blockers are used to disrupt the flow of calcium and can help treat heart failure. One major side effect of calcium channel blockers is that they can cause the gums to swell up, thus making chewing very difficult. In order to treat the swelling of the gums you will need to brush carefully and visit you dentists frequently, in severe cases surgery may even be required.
